With the final issue of writer Tim Seeley's Bloodshot arriving in stores this week, Valiant Entertainment is looking forward to releasing the first issue of their upcoming Shadowman series April 28. As Savage #2 comes out next week, and there will be no new Valiant comics released until Savage #3 April 14, I've postponed further coverage of Bloodshot #12 to talk Shadowman.
Yes, I know. I wanted to talk Bloodshot too. But hey: Shadowman is returning!
Shadowman #1 Black Glass 1:250 Variant by Jeff Dekal |
Senior Editor Heather Antos, who is overseeing this title, has insisted that this a full-on Horror comic. Here's a quote from the Valiant Entertainment press release:
In a recent interview with CBR, Cullen talked about how SHADOWMAN #1 is the perfect jumping-on spot whether you're a longtime fan of the iconic character or if this is your first time reading his stories. "This is a new approach to Shadowman. He has a new lease on life, a new grasp of his powers, and a new mission. For longtime readers, there will be some surprises. For new readers, this will be an introduction to a new kind of hero and a new kind of superhero/horror tale. For both, it's going to be exciting. There will be mysteries aplenty. Lots to talk about."
Senior Editor Heather Antos oversaw last year's Quantum & Woody series. This year, she's especially excited to bring us Savage and Shadowman. And then, there's her X-O-lent X-O Manowar series, which is taking a break for a few month so Valiant can throw its resources behind Savage and Shadowman. I'm kind of surprised to see her produce a series like Shadowman,
as I associate her with themes like fun, family, and societal issues. I
look forward to seeing how she and her creative team will reintroduce
Jack Boniface to Valiant Comics fans.
Here's a little more from the Valiant Entertainment press release:
From the bestselling master of horror Cullen Bunn (Venom) and bone-chilling artist Jon Davis-Hunt (Clean Room) comes a shocking supernatural odyssey. Jack Boniface is SHADOWMAN, a powerful protector who keeps humanity safe from the demons that claw at the fabric of our reality. The forces of darkness are awakening and they are hungry for life. Will Shadowman be able to save us all, or will the darkness devour the world as we know it?
The Black Glass Shadowman Cover is a 1:250 variant. This means a retailer will have to order 250 copies to purchase it. The artwork is certainly worthy of such a limited variant. It was done by artist Jeff Dekal, whose X-O Manowar painting graces the top of this blog.
This will no doubt be too expensive for ordinary fans like you and me to acquire. But if you love specialty covers, check with your comic shop or order service for availability. Then contact your bank manager, and see how if you can afford what's certain to be a Deadside favorite.
Given how inspiring I find his X-O Manowar artwork, I'm sure this super-special Shadowman variant cover will be a beauty to behold.

P.S.
Want to craft your own beautiful cover, or commission a unique sketch
from your favorite artist? Valiant will also be producing a Blank Cover for
Shadowman #1. It should tax your financial resources less than the Jeff Dekal Black Glass Cover. If you want a Blank Cover, don't rely on your local shop to automatically order it. Tell your retailer to want one to make sure you don't miss
out.
