Shadowman & Hurricane Katrina

Shadowman #1 Cover A by Jon Davis-Hunt

On the first page of Shadowman #1, we look down on New Orleans. But there's a faint pink haze. Are we gazing down on New Orleans through the veil? Are we actually seeing a demon's eye view from the Deadside?

Do these streets look like ordinary streets to you? What is that mound off to the left. Are the streets flooded? If so, what's floating in the water?

New Orleans has suffered significant floods. The most recent was Hurricane Katrina in 2005. As Jack Boniface fights demons in writer Cullen Bunn's story, and meets up with Baron Samedi, there's no current flooding. No one is drowning.

In Shadowman #1, writer Cullen Bunn suggests that there are areas of our world, such as New Orleans, where the veil between our world and the Deadside has worn thin. Does this mean that the timelines of significant and horrific events converge with these places in the present? Are these areas Jack Boniface calls Blights not only connected dimensionally with the Deadside, but also linked to various points in time?

The notion that some places are haunted suggests that events from the past can and do intrude upon the present in these locations. So are the demons and Baron Samedi watching all the suffering and dying that took place during Hurricane Katrina, while also watching all those who currently suffer and die in New Orleans?

Talk about a Grimm thought.
