Savage #1: All the Covers & Why You Need Them

Cover A by Marcus To

I thought I'd help you make up your shopping list as you head out to the comic store tomorrow. Savage #1 Cover A is by Marcus To, a comic artist from Canada who has worked for Marvel, DC, and lots of other publishers. Without wishing to drop any spoilers, this cover best illustrates the action that occurs during the second half of the issue.

Cover B by Christian Ward

Cover B is by Christian Ward. He's a multiple Eisner Award winner, who has done work with all the big publishing companies. He's involved in the series Once And Future from Boom Studios, which is one of the biggest indy titles out there right now. Most importantly, he's done a cover for each issue of Valiant's current X-O Manowar series (also overseen by Senior Editor Heather Antos).

For me, this series best represents the fake Kevin Sauvage. This is the image his manager wishes to perpetrate. It shows him as a social media darling. This persona that is being marketed at today's hottest sensation has gotten him on Dancing With The Stars, and put his picture on the front cover of all the teen and society magazines. For Kevin, this is the mold he's been poured into, and is beginning to feel trapped by.

Cover C by Stacey Lee

Cover C is by Stacey Lee. (Try saying that three times fast!) She's a cover artist who has done a lot of cover work for Marvel on premier titles like Silk, Spider-Gwen, and the Amazing Spider-Man. This cover best shows how young Kevin has been making a living, and can afford his cool apartment in London (one of the most expensive places to live in the U.K.) It may be difficult to find, as it's a retailer incentive. This means that for every twenty issues a store orders, the owner can order one of this cover. So if you like it, I suggest you call ahead, or get there early, and expect to pay a little more for it.

Pre-Order Cover by Guisseppe Cammuncoli

This beautiful pre-order cover is by Guisseppe Cammuncoli. (Hopefully I've spelled his name correctly). I don't think he's worked for Valiant before, but I could be wrong. He's clearly been around, having worked for the big two on titles like Amazing Spider-Man, Superior Spider-Man, All-Star Batman, Darth Vader, and Hellblazer

This cover best represents the first Savage series. It also represents the life Kevin Sauvage left behind, and is beginning to miss. Some shops stock pre-order covers for their customers; others don't order them unless a customer specifically requests them. So you may have to hunt around to find this one, but it's a winner.

Blank Cover by (Insert Name Here)

Are you a budding comic artist? Do you know an artist who does a great job drawing pictures of dinosaurs? Do you hope to attend a comic convention in the near future with the intention on getting a commission from an industry pro? Not all shops stock blank covers, but if you like getting your own unique cover to read or store away, this is an option. Additionally, blank covers are thicker. Hopefully, that means they offer better protection for a comic that is, by its nature, flimsy and delicate.

There you have it, your shopping list for Savage #1, and why you need each cover. Enjoy your trip to the comic shop tomorrow!
