Shadowman #8 Pre-Order Cover by Mico Suayan |
In Shadowman #8, available in stores tomorrow, we glimpse Ninjak battling the hordes invading our world amid the Deadside War.
After his stint penciling Bloodshot, Shadowman #8 gives Pedro Andreo another chance to draw the character who gave him his start at Valiant.
No picture of the chaos affecting our world would be complete without its most valiant defender, mighty X-O Manowar, fighting the evils that threaten all of us.
In Shadowman #8, writer Cullen Bunn brings Shadowman, Punk Mambo, and his new team of Abettors to the Deadside. Or at least, the realm formerly known as the Deadside, before the Deadside became sentient and took human form. Penciler Pedro Andreo and colorist Jordie Bellaire inspire awe of this magical and deadly realm.
I especially like the mythological connection of our heroes arriving on a boat.
Cullen Bunn has imbued the Deadside War story arc with more mythological connections than the first. This issue puts the Voodoo gods front and center.
Previous issues of the Deadside War called Baron Samedi's viability into question. In Shadowman #8, the King of the Dead returns with a vengeance.
Sometimes, Pedro Andreo packs so much into a panel it can be hard to interpret. At times, I wished Jordie Bellaire utilized a wider range of colors. But overall, the artists combine their talents in Shadowman #8 to make each scene evocative, haunting, and powerful.
As with The Warning in Valiant's series The Harbinger, I'd like to know the members of Shadowman's team better. If his Abettors don't return in July for Book Of Shadows, I hope they do soon.
Jon Davis-Hunt arguably portrayed Shadowman's facial mask more realistically in the first story arc. Nonetheless, I like how Pedro Andreo reveals Shadowman's personality. Gotta love that wry skeletal smile, Pedro!
The confrontation in the Deadside realm may be crucial to Shadowman #8. But to take down Lady Deadside, Shadowman and his team must return to our world. You can bet she'll pull out all the stops to remain here.
Who knows? She might just...
Oops!
Sorry. I won't spoil the end for you. I will say that Shadowman #8 brings the issue, the story arc, and the series to a satisfying end.
Intriguingly, it also leaves Punk Mambo controlling an immense power.
Shadowman #8 packs this final installment with more gods, demons, and otherworldly characters than you could possibly imagine. In this mythological horror masterpiece, Shadowman, Punk Mambo, and the new Abettors battle impossible odds. Can Shadowman's solution, and the peace he forges, work in the long-term? I guess we'll find out when Book Of Shadows arrives in July.
Despite any little quibbles I occasionally raise, writer Cullen Bunn, penciler Pedro Andreo, colorist Jordie Bellaire, and also letterer Clayton Cowles combined their talents in this story arc to make me appreciate Shadowman like never before.
Now, bring on July's Book Of Shadows!
