X-O Manowar #8 Pre-Order Cover by Dave Johnson |
Ruth Redmond continues to color Aric of Dacia's world in X-O Manowar #8. Or perhaps I should say Desmond's world, as this is the city he grew up in. Imagine seeing orange lightning arc through a green sky, while an artificial sun bathes everything around him in eerie green light: his basketball court, his neighborhood streets, and buildings as far as he can see.
The way the green springs up around everyone in X-O Manowar #8 evokes fear and dismay. People love seeing lush foliage, green leaves, flourishing plants. Green should be calming, suggest a welcome return to nature.
And yet, thanks to Ruth Redmond's efforts, it doesn't.
I can only imagine how many different shades of green Ruth had to use in composing her coloring for these scenes. Whatever program she uses for coloring, I wonder if she had to take extra time to import so many greens onto her digital palette. The way she colors the (what should I call them?) artificial plants, the sky, the nearby buildings, and gives the distant sky a green mist, certainly impresses.
Then of course, there's the bystanders wearing their own shades of green clothing.
As for the lady in the next panel's foreground who she's cast in a lavender shadow...well, I can't tell you why she did that, but it looks cool.
In X-O Manowar #8, Ruth Redmond helps us feel everyone's shock as their lives are interrupted, and normality is swept away, by a strange--and incomprehensible--green invasion.
