Ninjak #1 Spotlight: Lettering

Ninjak #1 Cover A by David Nakayama

While we await the next installment in Jeff Parker and Javier Pulido's new series, I thought I'd step back in time and do something I neglected to do initially. Namely: take a close-up look at Javier Pulido's lettering in Ninjak #1.

In the first panel of the first page, Javier Pulido roots us in place by spelling out London in capital letters. Yet these are not simple block lettering. The surfaces are eaten away or tarnished.

Perhaps they're spotted with blood, which long ago dried and blackened?

When the lady psiot begins reading Mr. Darvin and Neville Alcott's minds, the arrows from the dialogue balloons to their mouths get wobbly. Neville, Ninjak's former handler, seems more unbalanced by the experience, judging from the way the letters of his words float up and down.

Notice how his words get balanced again. Neville's evidently mustering his wits. He realizes something is off, and uses his phone to call for backup.

Either his phone isn't on silent, or when he punches in certain commands, the phone makes an interesting WVEEP noise.

Mr. Darbin may be Neville's superior in MI-6, but he lacks Neville's control. Does he realize the ramifications of Daylight's information raid before Neville? Or is he less experienced with the dangers of the field, and reacting out of terror?

Meanwhile, MI-6 songbird agent Myna observes Colin Quinn as he infiltrates a group of heavies surrounding a journalist. As she thinks of how she would write this field report, she makes sure to type Ninjak in bold letters.

You know, just to make sure no one at MI-6 misfiles the report.

Of course, some aspects of the letterer's art require no explanation.

In Ninjak #1, Javier Pulido finds thought-provoking ways to root us in a location, express drowsiness, terror, and resolve. He also demonstrates how a young agent on her first big assignment would fill out her paperwork properly to impress her superiors. Well done, letterer and artist Javier Pulido!
