Doctor Tomorrow 3: Superhero Team-up & Parallel Universes

It's been a long time since we've seen a new Valiant book, and Doctor Tomorrow #3 doesn't disappoint. As this Pre-Order cover by artist Hannah Templer suggests, this time our heroes come face-to-face with Hadrian, the man who would destroy our Valiant Universe.

In author Alejandro Arbona's story, older Bart Simms, who escaped the destruction of his universe, has instructed his younger counterpart in his powers, and prepared him for the coming battle. Backing up the two Barts are many of our favorite heroes, who have assembled in New York to prevent Hadrian from destroying our universe.

With Jim Towe's all-ages art, Doctor Tomorrow seems a good way to introduce young readers to the Valiant Universe. If they enjoy franchises like Robotech and Transformers, they'll enjoy seeing GIN-GR, a giant robot with a round floating head.

The vivid colors of Diego Rodriguez and Kelly Fitzpatrick will also help the Valiant Universe come alive for them.

With our entire Valiant Universe at stake, Doctor Tomorrow's choice for the lead assault on the evil Hadrian is GIN-GR and this blog's namesake, X-O Manowar. With Aric of Dacia having relocated to New York in the recent X-O Manowar #1, this means X-O is defending his adopted home town, and the young woman and her son who have taken him in.

Everyone's favorite member of the Harbinger Renegades, Faith Herbert, also plays a key role in the battle with Hadrian. Despite saving our world numerous times, the media has branded her a murderer. But she's innocent, and as good as they come, as readers will no doubt learn when Julie Murphy's upcoming young adult novel Faith Taking Flight hits bookshops, the internet, and perhaps a few grocery store spinner racks, on July 7.

(They may have to visit another universe Hadrian hasn't already destroyed to find those grocery store spinner racks, but you never know. Now and then, our universe can offer up a few surprises).

While the other Valiant heroes can assist them, ultimately it's up to the two Barts to save our universe. This won't be easy on young Bart Simms, or our Doctor Tomorrow. But then, nothing worthwhile ever is.

For the first time, we will also hear Hadrian's side of things. Is Bart's older counterpart from a destroyed universe telling our Valiant heroes the whole truth? Suspicions will be raised, and we'll have to wait for Issues #4 and 5 to learn the truth.

While you may not find the Pre-Order cover in the stores, you have a choice of covers. Cover A by Kenneth Rocafort depicts the older Bart Simms.

Cover B by Peach Momoko suggests young Bart's wonder at learning that, in our universe, he is our Doctor Tomorrow.

If you've missed out on the first two issues, now's the time to visit your local comic shop. After all, everyone loves a Superhero Team-Up, parallel universes, and giant robots. For that matter, who doesn't like stories about young people who have inherited great power, and must learn to wield it responsibly?
